Documentary Filmmaking: Telling the Stories that Need to be Told

Documentary filmmaker, Tamara Perkins, will discuss making the transition from story to screen in this workshop.

Tamara is a change maker focused on documentaries that inspire dialogue, as well as empower and provide voice for vulnerable communities. She founded Apple of Discord Productions and developed programs such as the Wisdom Project and San Quentin Media Project that train at-risk youth and incarcerated men in filmmaking as a tool for transformation. A grief support facilitator at heart, Tamara started these and other programs to help provide tools for processing trauma, reframing difficult experiences and reclaiming your future through empowered storytelling.

Her current documentary Life After Life began when incarcerated men taking Tamara’s yoga class in San Quentin State Prison found out she was a filmmaker and asked her to tell their story. Tamara has spoken on filmmaking, prison and human rights issues at agencies and universities including Stanford Law, Houston Institute for Race & Justice at Harvard Law and Equal Justice Society. Tamara was awarded NCCD’s Media for a Just Society Award in 2009, and presented the TEDx talk Life After: Embracing our Common Humanity in 2013.

Micah Morgan, an artist in residence at the African American Art & Culture Complex in San Francisco is a new media artist, film maker, and writer. As Chief Creative Officer of Axum Graphics, she is committed to changing the world of computer animation and virtual reality film-making. With Auteurist, she is opening up the field to a whole new class of storytellers by privileging the knowledge of film and theater over 3D jargon.

His extensive scoring catalogue spans a wide range of emotion and style.
